Gang Liu photo Gang Liu is a Senior Scientist/Oceanographer and the Chief Product Developer with the NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program. Dr. Liu earned his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Marine Science at North Carolina State University, in 2000 and 1995, respectively, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Oceanography from the Ocean University of Qingdao, China. Dr. Liu joined NOAA/NESDIS in 2000, shortly before the official inauguration of CRW.

Since then, Dr. Liu has led the development and operation of numerous products within NOAA CRW’s world-renowned global decision support system for coral reef management.

At CRW, Dr. Liu conducts research for product development; investigates historical changes in thermal conditions impacting coral reef ecosystems; and develops, implements, and maintains CRW’s satellite- and model-based products. Using CRW’s monitoring and prediction products, Dr. Liu monitors near real-time changes in the coral reef environment around the world, issues warnings, and communicates with collaborators and users in the field. Dr. Liu interacts routinely with CRW’s diverse and extensive user community about CRW products and their applications. He has presented at numerous conferences, workshops, and meetings, and has authored many journal articles and conference proceeding papers.
